The five of us turned to the staircase to see Key descending from them with utmost elegance. My brow furrowed in confusion as I wondered why Key would’ve hired me.
“Right on time, Yun,” he said as he reached the bottom step.
“YOU hired me?”
Key nodded and smiled in his typical mischievous manner.
“You will be my personal assistant,” he said.
“OUR personal assistant,” said a new voice that I immediately recognized.
Taemin descended from the same staircase Key had come from just moments before. I wondered if any more SHINee members would come down the stairs.
“Now I’m just confused,” I said.
“You’ll be SHINee’s personal assistant,” Taemin said as he approached me to give me a hug.
“So…what does that mean? What do I do with this job?”
“Basically, we’ll send you to run the errands that we don’t want to do,” Key said in an exasperated manner while running his fingers through his perfectly styled blonde hair.
Taemin shot Key a “don’t be rude” look, and then looked back at me with his former warm smile.
“It’s not too hard of a job. We might send you on a coffee run or something, but for the most part you’ll just be hanging out with us,” he said.
“I’m being PAID to hang out with you guys?”
“Yep! And the best part is that you’re technically an employee of SM, so you’re paid by SM and not us,” he replied with his infectious laugh.
“I wish we got a personal assistant,” Donghae said, sighing.
“Well too bad for you, Donghae. In the meantime, I think it’s about time we return to our practice upstairs,” Key said impatiently.
“He’s right,” Taemin said, “Are you ready, Yun?”
“Of course. Bye guys!” I said to the others as Taemin, Key, and I walked to the stairs.
As we climbed, I noticed I felt heavier than usual. It was probably just my imagination since I was now conscious of the baby’s existence. Regardless, I quickly lost my breath and had to pause between the third and fourth floor.
“Are you alright?” Taemin asked.
I nodded, trying to hide my heavy breathing. The only way I could keep myself standing was by grasping the handrail with a death grip.
“Um…I have to make a quick phone call,” I lied, “ Why don’t you two go on ahead and I’ll be up in a minute?”
Taemin hesitated, but eventually nodded and continued up the stairs (Key had continued walking during our conversation). I turned myself around and sat on a step, taking deep breaths. About a minute later, I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. It sounded like the person was running.
“Yun-ah, what’s wrong?” Jonghyun asked, panicked.
“What?” I asked.
“Taemin told me you weren’t looking well. Are you okay?”
“I think so. I don’t know why, but I’m having a bit of trouble with the stairs…”
“How so?”
“I lost my breath and I’m having trouble breathing now.”
“Is it because of the baby?”
“I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ll be taking the elevator for the rest of the way up.” I said with as much of a laugh as I could muster.
“No you won’t.” Jonghyun said.
He walked down a few steps and picked me up honeymoon-style. He then carried me the rest of the way up to the room where the SHINee practice was being held.
“You haven’t even done anything and you’re already getting special treatment,” Key said bitterly.
“Shut up, Key. This doesn’t concern you,” Jonghyun said as he set me down.
“No, yeobo, he’s right,” I said, and then turned to Key, “So what’s my first assignment?”
Key smiled mischievously again.
“I really need a coffee. How about you make a coffee run?” he said.
“Sure. What kind and from where?”
“Grande skinny vanilla latte with two espresso shots and two pumps of caramel syrup.”
“Okay so I’m guessing Starbucks. Anyone else want anything?”
“Venti pumpkin spice latte!” said Onew.
“Tall black coffee,” said Minho.
“Tall mocha coconut frappuccino!” said Taemin.
“Venti iced tea lemonade made with green tea, please,” said Jonghyun.
“Sounds good. Can I have the car keys?” I asked Jonghyun.
“Of course. Be careful,” he said as he tossed me the keys.
This time around, I made sure to take the elevator. One of the security guards escorted me through the remaining mob members, and I quickly got to the nearest Starbucks. Luckily, no one in the Starbucks recognized me, so I returned to the SM building after only twenty minutes. The boys were delighted to get their drinks, especially Key.
“Didn’t you get anything for yourself?” Jonghyun asked when he counted only five drinks.
“No, I don’t need anything,” I replied.
“Well lucky for you, I knew you wouldn’t get yourself anything even if you wanted it, so I ordered your favourite drink as a venti so we can share,” he said, smiling.
I smiled back and blushed a little. He knew me too well.
“Yun, I have your next assignment,” Key called from the other side of the room.
“What is it?”
“I need you to pick up my dry cleaning from that place next to the Baskin Robins near our dorm.”
“I’m on it, boss,” I said, smirking as I turned back around and left.
This task was more difficult than the previous task as Key apparently had a lot of dry cleaning. By the time I got it to the car and carried it inside the building and to the elevator, I was out of breath again. I was panting by the time I got to the practice room. I opened the door to the room, and just as I entered the doorway, I must’ve stepped on one of the dry cleaning bags, which led me to trip. I fell to the ground, but managed to avoid my stomach reaching hitting the floor. I breathed a sigh of relief as I knew the baby hadn’t been hurt.
“Yun-ah!” Jonghyun shouted as he saw me fall.
He rushed to my side and pulled me into his arms.
“BE CAREFUL! YOU’LL RUIN MY DRY CLEANING!” Key shouted.
“Don’t, Key,” Onew warned.
“Are you hurt?” Jonghyun asked me.
“I’m absolutely fine, yeobo, don’t worry.”
“Then get off the floor and hang up my dry cleaning, stat! It’s probably getting wrinkled!” Key said angrily.
“Back off, Key,” Jonghyun said, almost growling.
“Why should I back off? She’s just lazing! We hired her as our assistant, and she’s hardly assisting at all!”
“I SAID BACK OFF!” Jonghyun yelled.
Key was startled at first, but eventually grabbed his dry cleaning bags and left the room. I, too, was startled as I almost never heard Jonghyun use such volume. After a few moments of awkward silence, he spoke up again.
“Why don’t you go rest on the couch,” Jonghyun suggested, gesturing toward the red couch in the corner of the practice room.
“O-okay,” I said as I stood up and walked to the couch.
I watched the boys practice their dance (without Key) until I regained my strength, which was around lunchtime. The boys decided to take a lunch break, and I said I could pick up lunch. Jonghyun, of course, was worried about my wellbeing, so he tagged along to help out.
“So when should we tell everyone about the baby?” Jonghyun asked as we drove to the restaurant.
“I’m not sure, but we should definitely tell our families first.”
“For sure.”
“Should we tell them tomorrow?”
“Do you want to do it that soon?”
“We might as well.”
“Alright, tomorrow it is. What about friends?”
“Well…maybe we could have them all over to our place tomorrow night?”
Jonghyun laughed.
“You can’t wait to tell your friends, can you?”
“Nope,” I said, laughing with him.
“Okay then. We’ll tell our parents tomorrow morning, and then our friends tomorrow night.”
“Let’s narrow ‘friends’ down to my best friends and the other SHINee members.”
“I was just going to suggest that.”
I smiled at him and took his hand in mine, lacing our fingers together as we continued the on the road to the restaurant.
